When Eunice Dasher McCoy passed away, she had a provision in her will to preserve McCoy's Grand so that it would not be torn down or extensively remodeled. The theater, built in 1927, has undergone some renovations since that time, but it largely remains much as it was in its heyday. The McCoy-McMechen Theater & Museum is a popular stop during Hardy County's Heritage Weekend, held each year during the last weekend in September. Visitors can see everything from antique dishes to furniture. For film buffs the lobby contains publicity shots from such classics as "Gone With the Wind", "My Fair Lady" and "Fiddler on the Roof", and of course the theater and stage themselves are attractions.
The McCoy's Board of Directors is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the museum while keeping it alive as an active theater providing entertainment to the community. We invite you to stop by and see the historical treasure that is the McCoy-McMechen Theater & Museum.
We're hard at work on making a new space for audiences to enjoy in 2026. The new COURTYARD PLAZA AND GARDENS are underway to premiere in Spring of 2026. We'll be adding a new outdoor performance space, along with table seating. This new area will also include a recreation of Eunice McCoy's Gardens from the early days of McCoy's Grand. The new plaza and garden park will be available for everyone to enjoy. We are currently at work on Phase One - thanks to our community partners - Hardman's Hardware in Moorefield and Trex in Winchester, VA. We'll have Phase One done in time for the Fall Fest Open House and next Spring - Phase Two will take place to complete the project. We're excited to be able to share this new space with the community.
